He joined the Army and served with the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He was on the troopship SS Monterey on his way to Italy on November 6, 1943, when he saw the US destroyer “The Admiral Beatty” sunk by a German torpedo. He joined the Royal Canadian Army on September 3, 1939, enlisting with the 86th Coast Battery and going overseas on October 18, 1942. He landed in England on October 25, 1942, was posted to the Calgary Highlanders and was wounded in Nijmegen, Holland.After his discharge from the hospital, his Company was back in Germany. Roy received the 1939-45Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal and the France and Germany Star. He also received the “Thank You Canada Medal” for the part he played in theeffort to liberateHolland.Royhasbeena long time standingmember of theTorbay Branch#117andhas heldvariouspositionsover theyears.HepassedawayonJanuary1, 2007. Submitted by the Torbay Branch #117 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MACHUM, Donald WWII Donald was born in St. Margaret’s Bay, NS in 1924. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Europe. He was killed in action over the English Channel on May 29, 1944 at age 20. Donald is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England. Submitted by the Atlantic Branch #153 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MacGILLIVRAY, Ronald A. WWI Ronald enlisted at 29 in October 1915 with the 85th Battalion. He was posted to “C” Company and went the following May to Aldershot where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. After completing his training, he sailed for England in October and crossed to France on February 13, 1917. He took an active part in the decisive battles of Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and in the major operations at Lens and Cambrai. At Passchendaele, he won his commission as Lieutenant.
