Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 103 MACHUM, Ian Thompson WWII Ian was born in St. Margaret’s Bay, NS in 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada and Europe. He was killed in action in the NorthAtlantic on January 16, 1943 at the age of 20. Ian is buried in Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Submitted by the Atlantic Branch #153 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MacISAAC, Malcolm WWI Malcolm enlisted onApril 17, 1916 at New Glasgow with the 193rd Highland Battalion, trained at Aldershot and sailed for England on October 13, 1916. He trained at Witley Camp, Surrey, crossed to France on December 4 and was attached to the 42nd Battalion on the front line. He went over the top at Vimy Ridge and took part in the heavy fighting. On July 2, 1917, he was wounded at Avion, near Lens and after being treated in various hospitals in France and England, was invalidated to Canada on February 1, 1918 and discharged on December 5. His brother, Hector, was also in France and was gassed early in 1918 but was still on the firing line when the Armistice was signed. MacKILLOP, Angus WWI Angus enlisted with the 85th Battalion in October 1915 and was assigned to “C” Company. He spent the Christmas of 1916 in the trenches and in the course of his service in France, was wounded twice. He shared in the battles of Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MacKAY, Ida WWII Ida was born on Prince Edward Island. She joined the Army and served with the 14th General Hospital in Italy and France. She was on the Santa Elena when it was torpedoed by a German bomber and she made her way to the SS Monterey. She had climbed the large boarding net thrown over the side of the Monterey and on reaching the top, slipped and fell fifty or sixty feet to the water below.
