Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 107 MacPHERSON, Harold Stanton WWII Harold was born to Mr. and Mrs. John C. MacPherson in Afton, NS. He graduated from the Provincial Normal College and taught in Guysborough and Antigonish Counties and was teaching inAfton at the time of his enlistment. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 3, 1941 and was posted to an RCAF Wellington Bomber Squadron as a co-pilot. Harold was reported missing on active service following an air operation in March 1943 and was later reported deceased. Submitted by Tracadie & District. MacQUARRIE, Gordon Forbes WWI Gordon, from Port Hastings, Cape Breton, joined the 193rd Battalion on April 17, 1916 and trained at Aldershot, sailing to England the following October. Transferred to the 185th Battalion, he left for France on February 10, 1918 with a draft for the 85th Battalion. He took an active part in the heavy fighting of that summer’s campaign and was wounded by a high explosive shell on October 1. He was sent to Wimereux Hospital where he died from the effect of his wounds on November 8, 1918. Before enlisting, Gordon worked on shells at the Nova Scotia Steel Plant in New Glasgow, NS. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MARCHAND, Alphonse Edward WWII Alphonse was born inArichat, NS on January 6, 1925. He joined the Army on September 20, 1943 and served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in Canada, the UK and in Continental Europe. After the war, he volunteered for the Occupational Forces and after his discharge on March 8, 1946, worked for A.E.C.L. while he and his wife, Anita Forgeron, raised 4 children. Alphonse was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was a Life Member of RCL Isle Madame Branch #150 and served as President, Past President, Secretary and Bar Chairman. He died on November 2, 1999. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MARCHAND, Alfred F. WWII Alfred was born in Arichat, NS on July 24, 1920. He joined the Army and served with the Saskatoon Light Infantry (M.G.) of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps in England, France and Holland, where he was killed in action on August 23, 1945. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. Alfred is buried at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
