Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 115 McAULIFFE, Harry WWII Harry joined the Navy at 16 and was a Leading Signalman on the torpedo destroyer H.M.S. Grilse when war was declared. While on her way to Bermuda, there was a storm off the coast and part of the destroyer was washed away. Harry was killed as a result. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. McAULIFFE, John WWI John, father of Harry and Roy, answered the call of duty at the beginning of the war. He had 16 years previous service in the 63rd Rifles, 12 years in the British Navy and had also served in the Egyptian Campaign, where he had received a Medal with the 3 bars, Lonkin, Trefif, Tarnia and also the Khedive Star. He served with the 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles throughout WWI. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. McCHESNEY, May WWII May was born in Afton, NS. She graduated from Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow School of Nursing in 1937 and worked with the VON until September 1942, when she joined the Army in Halifax. She sailed for Sussex, England in September 1944 then went to No. 2 General Hospital in Belgium in April. She returned to England in the fall of 1944 and to Halifax in 1946. She retired from the Army in December 1967 after working at various Canadian military hospitals. She also worked for the Ontario Government as a nursing consultant until 1977. She married David Askeu in New Zealand in January 1981 and now resides in Oakville, Ontario. May is the sister of Clarence McChesney. Submitted by Tracadie & District. McAULIFFE, T. Roy WWI Roy joined the Navy in November 1916 at age 17 and was stationed on the Niobe for a short time. He then served on the HMS Shearwater as signalman and was stationed at Bermuda for some time.
