He enlisted in Halifax on May 29, 1944 and served in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe. He was discharged on July 29, 1946. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. Norman moved to the Tracadie area in his later years and resides in Afton, NS at present. Submitted by Tracadie & District. MILLER, Raymond Louis WWII Raymond was born in Lindsay Lake, Halifax County on September 24, 1923 to John and Christina Miller. At 19, on November 13, 1942, he joined the Army and served in the West Nova Scotia Regiment in the 1st Battalion, becoming an infantry signaler on July 22, 1943. On May 31, 1944, he joined the 4th Battalion. He served in the Italian Campaign where he was injured and died of his wounds on December 4, 1944. He is buried in the Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, Italy. His mother woke his stepfather one night to say she had just seen Ray standing at the foot of their bed and knew something had happened to him. A short time later, they got word he was missing in action and were subsequently notified that he had died. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Submitted independently. MITCHELL, Raymond N. WWI Raymond enlisted with the Nova Scotia Highlanders and left for overseas in 1916, later going to France. He saw active service in France then had a serious accident from a transport truck going over an embankment resulting in his being badly hurt in the back and shoulder. After leaving the hospital, he served on the police force in France. Raymond was also a policeman on the Halifax staff before the war. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. MITCHELL, John Joseph WWI John enlisted on February 10, 1915 in the 40th Battalion and transferred to the 25th. He sailed for England on March 20, 1915 and was stationed at Shorncliffe, Kent until he left for France in September 1915, taking part in the 2nd battle of Ypres where he remained until wounded in January 1916. Recovered from his wounds, he re-joined the 25th on March 31, 1916 and was in the battles of the Somme, Vimy and Cambrai until wounded again in November 1917. He was sent to a hospital in England and from there to the 17th Reserve Battalion, Bramshott. His father was in the 14th Ammunition Column and on reaching France, was transferred to the 16th Battery C.F.A. as a gunner. He was also wounded and invalided back to Canada and then discharged.
