Stern’s in Dartmouth before he enlisted in the 64th Battalion in the summer of 1915 at age 17. He left for England with his battalion on August 10, 1916 and was attached to the Canadian Army Medical Corps, never proceeding to the front as a unit. He crossed over to France on August 16, 1916. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. NICKS, B.E. WWI B.E. was one of the many who saw service in the defence of Halifax and desired to get overseas. He went with a draft from his regiment, the 63rd Halifax Rifles, in the fall of 1915 and after a period of intensive preparatory training in England, was transferred to the 13th Battalion and crossed over to France. O’GRADY, Harold WWI Harold enlisted on August 6, 1915 at Sydney in the 40th Battalion “C” Company and went to Valcartier Camp on August 13, 1915. He was there until October 18 then sailed to England. He went to France in February 1916 and fought in the battles of Ypres, the Somme and Courcelette. He was wounded in the back by shrapnel in the battle of Ypres on July 1, 1916 and was wounded again at Courcelette, this time in the hand. He was then transferred to Headquarters 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade and served as brigade runner until the Brigade Headquarters was demobilized. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Louise Fusiliers in England, France, Italy, Belgium and Holland. He passed away in 1965.
