He joined the Army on his 18th birthday and served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada in England, Belgium, Germany, Holland and France, including participating in the invasion of Normandy. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar, the France and Germany Star, and the 1939-45 Star. He was wounded twice in action, came home in late 1945 and was discharged in 1946. John married Carol Huber that year and they had 6 children. He passed away on January 11, 1999. John’s father, Joseph, served in WWI, and his two brothers served as well, Richard in WWII and Ralph during Peacetime, in Korea, Suez and Cyprus. He joined the Army at 16 and served with the 1st Depot in Canada. He had completed his training by 1917 and was to go overseas when they found out his age, so they discharged him. Joseph married Blanche Primeau, with whom he raised 8 children. His sons, John and Richard, served in WWII and Ralph served during Peacetime, in Korea, Suez and Cyprus. WWII Richard, son of Joseph and Blanche (Primeau) Robert, was born in Windsor, ON in 1927. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Regiment in Canada. He had signed on to the Pacific Force but the Atomic bomb was dropped shortly after and he was discharged. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. Joseph is married to Madeline Ouellette and they have 3 boys. Richard’s father, Joseph, served in WWI, and his two brothers served as well, John in WWII and Ralph during Peacetime, in Korea, Suez and Cyprus. He joined the Navy and served from 1950 to 1971 on HMCS Crescent, Iroquois, Portage, Granby, Fort Erie, Nootka, Magnificent, Cape Scott, La Hulloise, Bonaventure, and Gatineau. He received the Korea Medal, the Korean Volunteer Service Medal, the Special Service Medal, the Peacekeeping Medal, the UN Medal (Korea), the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar. After his discharge, he worked for the Legion for 13 years, retired, was the Service Officer for more than 18 years and is a Life Member of RCL Isle Madame Branch #150. He received many awards, including the Minister of Veteran Affairs Commendation, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Democracy 250 Medal. Ralph was married to Kathleen Samson (deceased) and they had 6 children. Ralph’s father, Joseph, served in WWI and his brothers, John and Richard, served in WWII.
