He fought through all the big battles, was buried twice in shell holes, was shell shocked and invalided to England. He is brother-in-law to Will Shortlen. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SIMON (ANDREWS), Rose WWII Rose was born in Sutton, Surrey, England, outside London. She served with the British Army in the Army Territorial Services during World War II. She met and married Frank Simon of Afton, NS in Britain and immigrated to Canada after the war. They settled in Antigonish County and raised 7 children. At present, Rose resides with her grandson in Addington Forks, NS. Submitted by Tracadie & District. SLADE, William WWI William was born in England in 1900 and came to Canada in 1904. He lived in Mulgrave until 1915 when he enlisted in 106 Battalion. He was with the 95 Regiment, transferred to the 25 Battalion and fought at Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele in 1917. He was at the Liberation of France, also serving in Belgium and Germany until 1919 when he was discharged in Halifax, NS. He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His brother Arthur fought with the US Army and a sister was a nurse with the British Army. After the war, he went to the US, married and had a son then came to the Monastery area in the 1930s after he was widowed. In 1939, he married Elsie Hart with whom he had 4 children. William is buried in Linwood Anglican Cemetery. Submitted by Tracadie & District. SIMON, Francis “Frank” WWII Frank was born to James Simon and Mary Jane Eldridge in Afton, NS. He enlisted in WWII and served in England, Sicily and Italy. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, and the 1939-45 Good Conduct Medal and Star. He married Rose Andrews from England and they settled in Antigonish County after the war and they had 7 children. Francis was a carpenter in civilian life and he died in 1992. At present, his wife, who is a British war veteran, lives in Addington Forks. Submitted by Tracadie & District.
