Stapleton enlisted at the age of 27 in Halifax with the “F” Company, 66th Princess Louise Fusiliers, on October 29, 1914. From this date until November 4, 1918, he served on the forts guarding Halifax Harbour. He tried to get sent overseas several times but was turned down. WWI William enlisted at the age of 23 with “C” Company, 66th Princess Louise Fusiliers and volunteered a year later for a draft to “B” Company, 40th Battalion. He sailed for England from Valcartier and then transferred to the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles, crossing to France where he took part in numerous battles, including those at Ypres and Cambrai. In the battle of Ypres, he was wounded by a gunshot in the side and later on in his hand and foot. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. STEPHENS, William Joseph WWI William enlisted in the No. 1 Company of the Royal Canadian Garrison Artillery (RCGA) at the outbreak of the war in 1914. He volunteered his services for overseas but it was deemed necessary by the higher command to retain the RCGA for garrison duty in the forts at Halifax. William was not allowed to proceed but was detailed for duty at the Halifax fortress. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. STEPHENS, Thomas E. WWI Thomas enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment at the age of 16 in April 1914 and went overseas in 1915. He fought in all the battles, then was wounded and granted furlough to Canada in order to get fit again, after which he rejoined his regiment in France. On November 10, 1918, just a few days before peace was declared, this young soldier died on the field of battle. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
