Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 175 THIBEDEAU, Stephen Larry WWII Stephen was born in Melbourne, Yarmouth County, NS in 1913. He joined the Army in 1941 and served with the 1st Canadian Armoured Car Regiment of the Royal Canadian Dragoons in the UK, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Holland. He was awarded the 193945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. He also received the Thank You Canada Medal for service liberating Holland at a celebration in Amsterdam marking the anniversary of D-Day. He was honourably discharged in October 1945. Stephen was a member of RCL Yarmouth Branch #061 before he passed away in 1968. Submitted by the Port Maitland Branch #143 of The Royal Canadian Legion. THOMAS, William J. WWI William enlisted on October 3, 1916 in Truro with the 2nd Construction Battalion. He was appointed Bandmaster and under his direction, the band did much to rouse enthusiasm and raise the morale of the men. The first band to welcome soldiers home was trained under his direction. He also trained black band members and this group was disbanded on May 11, as the men joined the ranks, went to France as a Forestry Battalion, to then be re-organized on December 2, 1917. Submitted by the Middleton Branch #001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. THORPE, Walter WWII Walter was born in Fredericton, NB and joined the Carleton and York Regiment in 1939. He participated in the invasion of Italy and Sicily and was wounded near Mount Cassino, Italy after which he spent some time in a South African hospital. After being discharged, he was moved to the West Nova’s Regiment for a short time and then transferred back to Carleton and York. Submitted independently. THOMPSON, Franklyn Vickery WWII Franklyn was born in Yarmouth, NS in 1909. He joined the Air Force and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Canada and Newfoundland, maintaining generators in St. John’s Harbour. He was also at Botwood and Cape Spear. Franklyn was a member of RCL Port Royal Branch #021 and died in 1987. He is buried in Wadeville Cemetery, Granville Centre.
