Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 29 BOWMAN, Edward Augustus WWII Edward, son of Charlie Bowman and Margaret MacDonald, was born in 1924. He enlisted in the Armed Forces in Halifax on October 27, 1943 and trained in Yarmouth, NS where he married Isobel Pettipas of Tracadie. He was transferred to Aldershot with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders until his embarkation for overseas. He arrived in England on July 3, 1944 and departed for France on July 19, where he was transferred to Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He was killed in action during a fierce battle of the “Falaise Gap” on August 29, 1944. At the time of his death, he was serving with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RCIC). He is buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laize in Normandy, France. Submitted by Tracadie & District. BOWMAN, John Joseph WWII John was the son of Margaret MacDonald and Charlie Bowman. He was also the brother of Edward Bowman, who was killed in France. John served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, driving ammunition to men at the front. He was wounded twice in July 1944. His medals include the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939-45, Defense Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Clarice Wells and they had one son and two daughters. John was a truck driver after the war. He is buried in Tracadie. Submitted by Tracadie & District. BREEN, Eugene Xavier WWII Eugene, son of Charles and Mary (Dhooge) Breen, was born in Merland, NS. He enlisted with the Forestry Corps and served in Canada, UK, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. After the war, he worked as a labourer and with the Department of Highways and married A. Lively, with whom he had 10 children. His wife died young and he never remarried. He lived in Monastery the rest of his life and is buried in Tracadie, NS. Eugene’s brother, Michael Charles, also served in the WWII, and his brother Francis served in WWI. Submitted by Tracadie & District. BOYLE, John Thompson WWI Thompson, son of Henry Boyle and Margaret Torpey, was born in Merland, Nova Scotia on November 15, 1897. When WWII started, he enlisted with the 36th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, serving in Canada, England and France with the Canadian Medical Corps. He was wounded at Vimy Ridge and returned home in March 1919. He settled in Afton, NS and married Irene Murphy and they raised 9 children. Thompson died on October 7, 1970 and is buried in Tracadie, Nova Scotia. Submitted by Tracadie & District.
