Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 49 DAYE, John Alexander WWII John, son of Marg and Bernie Daye, was born in Upper Big Tracadie, NS. He enlisted in September 1939 and went overseas in 1941 with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He served in England, Italy, France and Germany and was part of the allied invasion forces of Italy/Sicily in 1943. Discharged upon returning home, he married Dorothy Ash and they had 6 children. John was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 King George Medal. Submitted by Tracadie & District. DeCOFFE, James Oswald PEACETIME James, son of Oswald and Catherine (Walsh) DeCoffe was born in Afton, NS on March 30, 1937. He enlisted in 1953 in the Army and served in Nova Scotia, Alberta and Camp Borden, Ontario. He served with the Royal Canadian Highland Regiment and the Canadian Hussars Tank Corps. James was discharged in 1959 and never married. He was killed at work on January 25, 1968. Submitted by Tracadie & District. DeCOSTE, David WWI David was born to Mary Jane Mattie and Hubert DeCoste in Linwood, NS on December 4, 1896. He was a railway trackman before the war. He was drafted on February 11, 1918 to the 1st Battalion of the Nova Scotia Regiment. David was killed in action. Submitted by Tracadie & District. DeCOSTE, Damian James WWII Damian was born to Sadie and Frank DeCoste in Grosvenor on July 1, 1915. He enlisted in September 1941 in New Glasgow and served in the Infantry in Canada, UK and Continental Europe. He received the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45, and the General Service Badge. He was part of one fierce battle in which only he and a couple others survived. He signed up for the Pacific Theatre but was not sent. Discharged on November 12, 1945, he later reenlisted and served in Canada until July 27, 1957. He was married to Alice Durley, had 10 children, and worked in Ontario after his final discharge. His last years were spent in Halifax and he is buried in Tracadie. His brother, William, also served in WWII. Submitted by Tracadie & District.
