Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 55 DEN HARTOG, Johannes D.R. PEACETIME Johannes was born in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1936. He joined the music branch of the Canadian Forces on January 21, 1955 in The Hague, Netherlands, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on February 25th. He was one of the original members of the Black Watch (RHR) of the Canadian Military Band which was officially formed in May 1955 and stationed in Windsor Park, Halifax, NS. He served at CFB Gagetown, NB, Soest (Fort York), Germany, with the Black Watch and was present for the 20th Anniversary of D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy in 1964. After the Black Watch was disbanded in 1969, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, stationed at Mobile Command HQ, St. Hubert, Quebec until he retired in 1987. Johannes received the Centennial Medal, the Silver Jubilee Medal, the Canadian Forces Decoration 2 and the South-West Asia Service Medal. Submitted by the Lawrencetown Branch #112 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DeWOLF, Frederick Leo WWII Frederick was born in Pomquet, NS on April 19, 1899. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on March 3, 1941. He served in England and in the Mediterranean Sea on HMCS Puncher, an aircraft carrier providing air protection to convoys and was involved with airstrikes operations against German-occupied industrial and shipping targets in Norway. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Atlantic Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. After his honourable discharge as a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class, Shipwright, on September 21, 1945, he raised 9 children with his wife, Martha. Frederick worked as a carpenter until he retired and passed away on March 16, 1985. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DODGE, Carl WWII Carl was born and educated in Halifax, NS. He joined the Army and served with the Princess Louise Fusiliers in France, Holland, Belgium and Italy. He returned to Canada in January 1946 with the Fusiliers. Carl and his wife, Joy, live in Fall River, NS where they raised their 3 children. He passed away in 2005. Submitted by the Atlantic Branch #153 of The Royal Canadian Legion. DIXON, Frank WWI Frank enlisted in “B” Company of the 64th Regiment in September, 1915 at age 27. He sailed for overseas in March, 1916 after some months of training in Canada. In England, he was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Battalion and 3 months later, left for France.
