Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 63 FOUGERE, Gilbert Mark WWII Gilbert, son of Daniel and Charlotte (Levangie) Fougere, was born in Frankville, NS. He enlisted in the Army in Halifax, NS and his Infantry unit was waiting there to go overseas when the war ended. He served in Canada until 1946, helping transport German POWs from North Bay, ON to Halifax where they were shipped back to Europe. After discharge, he worked for the CN as a telegraph operator and later married Mabel Pettipas. They moved to Sept Isles, QC and later, Toronto ON. In the mid-1970s, he moved to Linwood and worked for Michelin until retirement. Gilbert is very active in the Legion. He and Mable live in Linwood at present and heis a member of the Tracadie Veteran’s Committee. Submitted by Tracadie & District. FOUGERE, Joseph Gerald WWII Joseph was born in Poulamon, NS on May 23, 1916. He joined the Army and served with the Perth Regiment of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps in England, France and Holland where he was killed in action on April 26, 1945. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. FOUGERE, Tony WWI Tony was born in Arichat, NS on November 25, 1892. He joined the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in France where he was killed in action on May 21, 1918. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914-18 Star. Joseph is buried at Étaples Military Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France. Submitted by the Isle Madame Branch #150 of The Royal Canadian Legion. FOUGERE, Leo Henry WWII Leo was born in Poulamon, NS on June 9, 1915. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served as Petty Officer Stoker on HMCS Shawinigan on the high seas and in the Atlantic. He and his crew were killed in action on November 24, 1944 when their ship was torpedoed in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Leo was awarded the War Medal 1939-45, the Atlantic Star, the 1939-45 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Bar. Submitted independently.
