Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 81 HURST, Percy James WWI Percy, son of Samuel and Margaret (Parker) Hurst, was born on July 24, 1896 in Canso, NS. He joined the Army on May 29, 1916 and served in WWI with the 1st Nova Scotia Depot Battalion in Canada and England, where Percy was discharged in 1919. He also served as a security guard in Canso during WWII. Percy and his wife, Clara, had 7 children. He died February 4, 1988. Submitted by the Chedabucto Branch #046 of The Royal Canadian Legion. JOHNSTON, Edmund Gerard WWII & SPECIAL DUTYAREA Edmund, born to William and Minnie (Delorey) Johnston, was born in East Tracadie, NS on October 3, 1926. He joined the military with the Pictou Highlanders in 1945. He went into regular army on September 27, 1951 and served in Petawawa, ON; Churchill, MB; then in Egypt, Cyprus and Germany. He retired in 1977 after twenty-seven years of service. He then worked in lumber woods and sawmills until he retired. He received the United Nations Service Medal (Korea), United Nations Emergency Force Medal (UNEF), United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. He now lives in Doaktown, NB. Edmund never married. Submitted by Tracadie & District. KELLY, Donald Edward WWII Donald was born in 1922 in Halifax, NS. He joined the Army and served with the 1st Canadian Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment (Kangaroos) and the 5th Canadian Armoured Regiment, 8th N.B. Hussars in NW Europe, France, Holland and Germany. Donald received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 Medal. He was also awarded, posthumously, the Thank You Canada Anniversary Medal, a medal issued on the 55th anniversary in 2000 awarded to Veterans who came to Holland during the Liberation. Donald died in 1964. Submitted independently. KEDDY, William David WWI William, of Dartmouth, enlisted with the 219th Battalion in Halifax on October 30 and transferred to England with the 85th Battalion. He fought in the battle of Passchendaele where he lost his life at the age of twenty-eight. William was the son of Mrs. J. Keddy of Dartmouth, NS.
