These books are produced in an effort to honour and remember the lives and deeds of our Veterans and even after 9 volumes, the Legion branches of The R.C.L. as well as the general public continue to support this publication by contributing biographies and photos as well as through their generous support through donations and advertising. Submitted independently. ARBUCKLE, James WWII James was born on December 23, 1917 on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He enlisted on July 3, 1941 and served with the Prince Edward Island Light Horse Regiment and the North Shore Highlanders. He was discharged on December 3, 1945 and received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. James died on August 10, 1983. Submitted independently. ARBUCKLE, George WWII George was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia on October 3, 1919. He enlisted on June 12, 1940 and served with the Cape Breton Highlanders, the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, and the Royal Canadian Provost Corps during WWII. George was discharged on October 20, 1946 and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and was Honourably Mentioned in Dispatch. He enlisted on May 9, 1941 and served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. He was discharged on October 8, 1945 but re-enlisted on March 5, 1954 to serve again in the Medical Corps. His second discharge was on July 12, 1963. Robertson’s medals include the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the Canadian Forces Decoration, and the UN Peacekeeping Medal for Korea. Robertson died on February 15, 1977. Submitted independently. ARBUCKLE, Stewart KOREA & SPECIAL DUTY AREA Stewart was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia on January 19, 1928. He enlisted on March 16, 1951 and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He was discharged on January 9, 1972. Stewart was awarded the UN Peacekeeping Medal (Korea), the UN Emergency Force Medal (Egypt), the UN Peacekeeping Medal with Clasp (Belgian Congo) for 2 tours, the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the NATO Service Medal, and the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. Stewart died on February 13, 2000. Submitted independently. ARCHIBALD, Donald Gladwin WWII Donald was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 26, 1917. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on June 6, 1942 and served in the North Atlantic on HMCS Avalon, Preserver, and Mayflower. He was discharged as a Lieutenant on October 8, 1945. Donald was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. He died on January 26, 1976. Submitted independently. ARBUCKLE, William Dickie Jr. WWII William was born on April 17, 1913 on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He enlisted on June 12, 1940 and served with the Cape Breton Highlanders and the Royal Canadian Army Provost Corps. He was discharged on December 3, 1945 but reenlisted on January 5, 1954 and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers until his second discharge in June 1965. William’s medals include the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the NATO Service Medal, and the Canadian Forces Decoration. WWI N.J. enlisted with the 85th Battalion and went to France where he saw severe and extensive fighting at Vimy Ridge. He was wounded at Avion and was sent to England to recover. He then returned to the fighting and was wounded again at Oppy, near Pas de Calais, on Christmas Eve, 1917. N.J. was sent home on June 14, 1918. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BARNSTEAD, Walter O. WWI Walter enlisted with the 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles (C.M.R.) in 1914 and then was transferred to the 5th C.M.R. After six weeks in England, he went to France and won his commission in 1916, instructing infantry battalions. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre for bravery on the field. After the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals as a lineman, retiring as Line Construction Foreman Warren Officer. For more than 48 years, Joe was a member of Carleton Place Legion Branch # 192 in Ontario and Grandona Legion Branch # 124, where he served in every position and received the Meritorious Service Medal and Life Membership, also serving as District 1 Zone Commander. He trained at McNab’s Island and sailed from St. John, spending about ten months in England in the 17th Reserve before being transferred to the Forestry Battalion in France. Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 29 CONNORS, Walter WWI Walter enlisted on October 18, 1915 at Windsor in the 112th Battalion. He was stationed at Bramshott, England for three months and then transferred to the 25th Battalion, proceeding to France where he received a gunshot wound in the back at Cambrai on August 15, 1918. Walter was sent back to England to convalesce. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. CONRAD, H. B. WWI H.B. Conrad enlisted with the 219th Battalion then was transferred to the 85th Battalion, and then sent to France. After some time, he was invalided home as unfit for further service. Corporal Conrad is one of a family of three who have fought in the Great War. Two of his brothers were in the United States Army. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. COPLEY, Edward Alexander WWII Edward was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia. He joined the Canadian Army and served during World War II. Edward has been a member of Captain Angus L. COOPER, Ronald Ellwood SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Ronald was born in Vermilion, Alberta on June 5, 1942. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and served on HMCS Cap de la Madeleine and HMCS Bonaventure in Canada and on the high seas during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He spent nine years in the Navy, six as a Signalman and three years as Radio Air. Ronald died in 2013. Submitted independently.

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 31 CRAWLEY, Arthur WWI Arthur enlisted with the 85th Battalion on September 4, 1916 and trained in Aldershot. He sailed overseas in October 1916 and went to France with the rank of Corporal. Arthur fought there for many months until the spring of 1917 when he was killed at Vimy Ridge. CUNNINGHAM, Austin Ward WWI Austin left his studies for the ministry at King’s College, Windsor, and joined the 66th Princess Louise Fusiliers as Lieutenant in September 1914. He was then transferred to the 40th Battalion as a signaling officer and did construction work in England. Austin went over with the Cable Signaling Corps of the Royal C. Corps to France in June, 1918 and was still on the firing line when the Armistice was signed. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
