He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 and served until 1946, at which time he began a 29-year career working for the Department of National Defence at CFB Halifax. WWI Richard enlisted at age 20 in Halifax with the 10th Siege Battery on October 22, 1917 and sailed for England a month later.
