He joined the Army and served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment in Italy and Northwest Europe during World War II. John has been a member of Captain Angus L. He served with the 185th Battalion of the Cape Breton Highlanders in Europe during World War I. Sergeant Blair has been a Life member of Captain Angus L. MacDonald Legion Branch 132 in Inverness. Submitted by the Inverness Branch # 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BURNS, Emmett WWI Emmett enlisted in the 63rd and went overseas in February 1916. He was stationed in England for four months and was then transferred to the 9th Machine Gun Company. He was in France for a year-and-a-half. Emmett was in the Battle of Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, and Passchendaele. He was convalescing in England with rheumatism when peace was declared. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. BURKE, Joseph Richard “Joe” WWII Joe Burke, born in October 1923, joined the Cape Breton Highlanders in June 1940. He went to the North Shore New Brunswick Regiment and trained as an Infantry Signals Dispatch Rider. He then went to Normandy with Toronto Scottish (Machine Gun) Regiment. After the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals as a lineman, retiring as Line Construction Foreman Warren Officer. For more than 48 years, Joe was a member of Carleton Place Legion Branch # 192 in Ontario and Grandona Legion Branch # 124, where he served in every position and received the Meritorious Service Medal and Life Membership, also serving as District 1 Zone Commander. Joe received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his community work. Submitted by the Grandona Branch # 124 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
