Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 195 WILKEN, Sven WWII Sven was born in Denmark and served in Canada, England and the United States with the Canadian Merchant Navy and the American Merchant Navy during World War II. He married Fairlie Sutherland and they raised three sons. Sven died in Florida, USA in 1965. Submitted independently. WILLIAMS, John WWI John enlisted with the 2nd Construction Battalion in Halifax in August 1916 and then sailed overseas. After several months in England, he went to France and then came back to England. After a period of service there, John returned to Canada in January 1918. Submitted by the Middleton Branch # 001 of The Royal Canadian Legion. ZWICKER, Vernon WWII Vernon was born in Drumhead, NS. He joined the Reserve Army in 1942 and served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment and the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He served with the 49th Loyal Edmonton Regiment in England, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and at the liberation of Holland. After the war, Vernon volunteered for the Pacific Force and was in Camp Debert with the West Nova Scotia Regiment until the war in Japan ended on August 6, 1945. He was discharged on October 10, 1946. He received the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal. He joined the RCL in Goldboro in 1963 then transferred to Torbay Branch #117. This marks his 46th year. Submitted by the Digby Branch #020 of The Royal Canadian Legion. YOUNG, W. Harry WWI Harry enlisted in the 40th Battalion in 1915, proceeded to England and upon arrival, was attached to the Machine Gun section. Drafted to France, he was transferred to the 5th Canadian Machine Company and fought in the famous battles of Vimy Ridge, Avion, Len, Hill 70 and Passchendaele. Harry was badly wounded at Hill 70 but he rejoined his regiment when he was fit again. He was awarded the much coveted Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty, which is one of the highest honours that can be granted in the Army to an N.C.O. or Private.
