He joined the Army during World War I and served as a Private in Europe with the 185th Battalion, Cape Breton Highlanders. Submitted by the Inverness Branch # 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GILLIS, John Angus WWI John was born in Upper Margaree, Nova Scotia. He joined the Army during World War I and served in Europe with the 185th Battalion, Cape Breton Highlanders. Submitted by the Inverness Branch # 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GILLIS, John Peter WWI John was born in Gillisdale, Cape Breton on April 23, 1887. He worked in the coal mines in Inverness and later moved to Dominion Cape Breton to work in the mines there. During World War I, he joined the 85th Battalion of the Nova Scotia Highlanders and went to England and later to France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Corporal Gillis was killed in action on Vimy Ridge in France on April 12, 1917. He is buried in La Chaudière Cemetery in France. Submitted by the Inverness Branch # 132 of The Royal Canadian Legion. GILLIS, John Neil WWII John was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia. He served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada in France, Europe and Italy during World War II.
