He served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, the Cape Breton Highlanders and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. Private MacDonald served in Canada and Italy, as well as in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. Predeceased by his first wife, Olive Hunter, he later married Helen Chester.
