Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 117 FLECK, Roland Arthur WWI Roland, son of Alexander and Emma (Andrews) Fleck of South Branch, was born in 1897. He was a farmer prior to enlisting with the 193rd Battalion of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He also served with the 85th Battalion and the 193rd Machine Gun Company. Roland was wounded at Passchendaele and received a medical discharge in 1919. He married Helen Currie and settled in Stewiacke where he ran a trucking business for a number of years. Roland passed away in 1989. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society FLEMMING, Francis “Frank” WWII Frank was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served as a gunner on Corvettes on convoy duty in the North Atlantic, serving in Canada, Newfoundland, on the high seas in the English Channel. Frank saw action at Juno Beach during the Normandy landing and he saw many ports such as Plymouth, Bristol, Portsmouth and places in Iceland, Scotland and Iceland during his tours of duty. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Frank was a member of Spryfield Legion Branch # 152 for two years before he passed away in 2006. Submitted by the Spryfield Branch # 152 of The Royal Canadian Legion FLETCHER, Alfred Gordon WWI Alfred was born on October 19, 1898. He served with the 87th Battalion Canadian Infantry, Canadian Grenadier Guards. He enlisted in the 106th Battalion and served overseas on July 15, 1916. He went to France in November 1916 and was transferred to the 87th Battalion. He missed the England to France transport with his own Canadian Company because he had the German measles. Alfred was later shipped out with a British Company. Once in France, he was then transferred to the 87th Battalion. Alfred was killed in action on March 24, 1918 at the age of 19.
