Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 127 GASS, Clare WWI Clare was born on March 18, 1881 in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. She enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in Montreal, Quebec on April 13, 1915 and served as a Nursing Sister in Europe with the McGill Hospital Unit. She was one of the pioneers who laid the foundation of medical social work in Canada and was a director of social service division of Montreal General Hospital. Clare was a Charter Member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers. Submitted independently GASS, Cyril WWI Cyril was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia on April 10, 1896. He was a bank clerk when he joined the Canadian Infantry in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 6, 1914 at the age of 18. Lance Corporal Gass served with the 25th Battalion in Europe and was wounded at Ypres on June 12, 1916 when one of his feet was shattered which required amputation. Cyril was 75 years old when he passed away on January 1, 1972. He was buried in the Preeper Hill Cemetery in Shubenacadie. Submitted independently GASS, Gerald WWI Gerald was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia on March 25, 1892 and he was a butcher by trade. He was 22 years old when he joined the Canadian Cavalry at Valcartier, Quebec on September 21, 1914 and served in Europe as a Corporal with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in Signals during World War I. Gerald passed away and was buried in the Preeper Hill Cemetery in Shubenacadie. Submitted independently
