Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 201 SUTHERLAND, Daniel Hugh WWI & WWII Daniel was born in River John, Nova Scotia in 1878. After enlisting in 1916 in the 193rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was asked to recruit and command an all Black Battalion, the No. 2 Construction Battalion CEF, Canada’s first and only black Battalion which served in Canada, England and France. After the war, he worked in mining in Canada and Mexico then re-settled in River John with his family. When WWII broke out, he was asked to recruit and train a second Battalion of the Pictou Highlanders, headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Daniel was active in the community and the local Legion Branch # 108. He married Emily Pugsley in 1912 and they had a son. He died in 1977. Submitted independently SUTHERLAND, Robert Hiram “Bob” WWI & WWII Bob was born in River John, Nova Scotia in 1882. He was granted an MD degree from McGill University and at the outbreak of WWI, enlisted and served overseas, taking part in the Dardanelles campaign. After the war, “Dr. Bob” was appointed Superintendent of Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax after which he practiced in Springhill, then Pictou. He was President of the Nova Scotia Medical Society for a year, Medical Officer of Health for the town of Pictou as well as coroner for the western part of Pictou County for twenty years. Dr. Sutherland re-enlisted in WWII with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps and was placed in charge of Nova Scotia hospitals, serving positions in Halifax, Sydney and Aldershot. After the war, he returned to his practice in Pictou. He was a member of Pictou Legion Branch # 016 before his death on December 31, 1962. Submitted independently TAYLOR, Ken Earl WWII Ken was born in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on the supply ship General Dorey.
