Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 79 COOPER, William John “Chick” “Bill” PEACETIME Bill was born in Oshawa, Ontario on February 25, 1938. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy as Naval Air Technician on August 8, 1955. He served on HMCS Cape Breton, Annapolis, Iroquois and Assiniboine in Canada and was posted at the Cornwallis, Shearwater and Borden Canadian bases. Bill spent 23 years in the Navy, retiring in CFB Borden on October 8, 1978. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and he served with Squadrons HS-50, HU-21, VS-880, VX-10 and VF870. His last rank was C1AT, Naval Air Helicopter Technician. Bill was an enthusiastic attendee at CNAG gatherings and he loved to talk about his days in the Navy. In 2013, Bill died of cancer in Ontario. Submitted independently COPE, James WWI James was born on January 9, 1897 in Stanley, Nova Scotia. He had previous militia service in the 76th Regiment and enlisted with the Army on December 11, 1915. He served with the Canadian Infantry (Nova Scotia Regiment), 25th Battalion Division. James was killed in action on April 17, 1918 at the age of 21 and he is buried in the Wailly Orchard Cemetery at Pas de Calais, France (Grave reference: II. B. 22.)
