Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 91 DAVIS, Edgar WWI Edgar, son of Solomon and Mary (Cox) Davis of South Branch, was born in 1893 and enlisted with the 193rd Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders, in 1919, serving in Canada and overseas in England and France. Edgar fought in many areas including Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele. He was wounded in 1918 causing him to lose the sight of one eye and to spend time in hospital in England. In 1921, he married Elizabeth Dickey Bates, daughter of George and Martha (Lays) Bates of Middle Stewiacke. Edgar was an active member of the community serving as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent in the Middle Stewiacke United Church. He also served on the municipal school board for a time. Edgar passed away in 1981. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society DAVIS, Frederick WWI Fred was born in 1885 in South Branch, son of Solomon and Mary (Cox) Davis. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, Quebec Regiment, 42nd Battalion and was killed in action on November 17, 1917. Frederick is buried in Passchendaele, Belgium. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society DAVIS, John Thompson WWI John was born in 1897 in South Branch, son of Solomon and Mary (Cox) Davis. He enlisted in the Army with the 106th Battalion and served overseas in France. After the war, he went to the United States, where he married Catherine Burrows and lived in East Braintee, Massachusetts. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society
