Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 97 DEAN, William Joseph WWI Joe was born in Newton Mills in 1895, son of David Kirke and Charlotte (Ansell) Dean. He enlisted in the Canadian Army at Halifax in 1917 and his trade before enlisting was a sawyer. He married (1) Mary Ann Flemming of Upper Musquodoboit and they had a family of 12 children. Later, he married (2) Georgina Graham of Bible Hill and had two children. Joe passed away in 1959. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society DEYARMOND, Charles Proven WWI Charlie was born in Burnside in 1896, son of James William and Agnes (Wilson) Deyarmond, and served with the 76th Regiment, Canadian Militia. After the war, he married Harriet Irene Wentzell. When she died, he returned to live with his aged parents in Burnside. Charlie passed away in 1937 and is buried in Proven Cemetery in Burnside. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society DEYARMOND, George Robert WWI Bob was born in Burnside in 1887, son of James William and Agnes (Wilson) Deyarmond, and joined the 106th Battalion of the Canadian Army, Nova Scotia Rifles. He later transferred to the 25th Battalion and went overseas where he was wounded on Christmas Day, 1916, losing his sight in one eye. After this, he was attached to the Forestry Corps in France. In 1920, he married Ethel May Bentley, daughter of David Baldwin and Sarah Sophia (Henry) Bentley of Upper Stewiacke, and lived in Upper Stewiacke Village where Bob was employed at Blaikie’s Mill. He also acted as the village barber, cutting hair at his home. George passed away in 1979. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society
