Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 139 OLAND, Don James WWII Don was born on February 18, 1922 in Havana, Cuba to Colonel Sidney C. and Herlinda (deBedia) Oland. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) in 1943, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant on January 25, 1946. In World War II, Lieutenant Oland was a Canloan Officer and served in Britain and Northwest Europe with the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Warwichshire Regiment, which fought alongside the British 2nd Army. He was wounded three times during this war, and on the third time, on April 16, 1945, while leading his platoon during the Battalion’s attack on Binkum on the outskirts of Bremen, the wound resulted in the loss of a leg. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and War Medal 1939-45. Don passed away on January 27, 1986 in Halifax, NS. Submitted independently OLAND, J. Eric W. WWI & WWII Eric was born on February 27, 1895 in Dartmouth, NS to parents W.C. and Ella Young (Bauld) Oland. He enrolled in the Royal Naval College in Halifax in January 1911. In May 1917, he was appointed Acting Lieutenant. In July 1925, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, retiring in April 1939 with the rank of Captain. On August 28, 1939, he was recalled to active service, and on October 14, 1944, he retired with the rank of Captain. Captain Oland served on several ships in several theatres in World War I, and during World War II, he was Naval Officerin-Charge at Saint John, NB and Montreal, PQ. At various times, he was Staff of Royal Naval College, Director of Naval Reserves at Naval Headquarters and on loan to the RCMP Marine Section. He was the first Canadian Naval Officer awarded the DSC in the First World War “for distinguished service in destroyers during the war.” Eric passed away on November 9, 1948 in Victoria, British Columbia. Submitted independently OLAND, Victor deBedia WWII Victor was born on August 9, 1913 in Halifax, NS to parents Sidney C. and Herlinda (deBedia) Oland. He joined the Canadian Army Militia on September 23, 1929, being honourably discharged on August 31, 1939, with the rank of Captain. On September 1, 1939, he enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active), Royal Canadian Artillery, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on October 15, 1945. During the Second World War, Brigadier General Oland saw action in the South-west Pacific Arena. In April 1946, he joined the Canadian Army (Reserve), and retired in June 1950. He rejoined the Canadian Army (Reserve) in January 1956, and retired with the rank of Brigadier General on July 31, 1960. He was appointed the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1968-1973. He received the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-45 and Efficiency Decoration. He was named Honorary Colonel of the Halifax 1st Field Regiment. Victor passed away on June 27, 1983 in Halifax, NS. Submitted independently
