Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 171 SHEA, Gerald Charles “Gerry” WWII Gerry was born on March 5, 1918, the son of William and Aztasia (Hawley) Shea. He enlisted to serve in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 under the name “Gerry Moore.” One of only 292 Canadian Volunteers in the Spanish government forces, he was a machine gunner with the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion in the International Brigade. He enlisted in the navy on October 31, 1939 and served on the SS Sire. He transferred from the SS Sire to the SS Protecteur on September 26, 1941. The SS Sire was torpedoed and sank shortly after, in February 1941. He served in Halifax, American ports, the Suez Canal, and South Africa. He received the 1939-45 Star, Medal and Clasp. He married Alice Collins and worked in the Sydney Steel Plant for 38 years after the war. He was also a commanding officer in the Glace Bay Sea Cadets. Gerry passed away at the age of 70, and is buried in Forest Haven Cemetery. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion SHEA, Victor Thompkins WWII Victor was born in Tompkinsville, Guys. Co., Nova Scotia on Dec. 4, 1924. He enlisted in the Army with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was in Canada in July 1942 until April 1944. He was in the UK from April 1944 to June 1944. He was back in the UK May 6, 1945, then in France on June 6, 1944 D-Day by Ship. His ship was one of the first to land at Juno Beach where many of his buddies were killed and he helped carry his dead comrades to shore. He has earned the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Clasp CSMM War Medal 1939-45, General Service Badge 1939-45 and France-Germany Star. Victor spent 626 in Canada and 360 days overseas during the War years. He has been nominated by Torbay Branch to receive the National Order of the Legion of Honour from the French Government. He is an outstanding gentleman and I have been honored to meet such a wonderful man. He will be remembered and respected for his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch # 117 of The Royal Canadian Legion SHEPARD, Albert WWII Albert was born in March 1925. He was the son of Charles and Sadie (Holmes) Shepard. After the war, he married Martha Anderson of Donkin, NS. He entered the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 at the age of 17 and served on the British cruiser, the Sheffield, and participated in the sinking of the battleship Scharnhorst. He eventually moved to Massachusetts. Albert passed away on May 12, 1982. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion
