Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 187 SUTHERLAND, John Donald WWII John was born in 1922 in Spiddle Hill, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in Truro, NS in June 1941. He went to England in August 1941 with the 3rd Division RCASE for which he took basic training. He then served with 13 Field Ambulance as a driver. In June 1944, he landed in Normandy. He also served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the War Medal. He returned to Canada in January 1946 where he served from 1954 to 1957 with the Canadian Provost Corps. He also served with the N.S Highlanders Pipe Band from 1960 to 1964. He has been a member of Branch # 064 for 8 years and Branch # 026 for 30 years. Submitted by the Colchester Branch # 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion SWAINE, Arthur E. WWI Arthur was born in Canso, Nova Scotia on May 10, 1891 to the late Emily “Emma” McLellan of New Harbour and Samuel I. Swaine of Canso. They had 3 sons who went to war; two were killed in action and one accidently. Arthur joined the Army and was with the 43rd Canadian Infantry Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. He enlisted on August 14, 1915. He was killed in action on Sept. 21, 1916 at the age of 25. He is buried at Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He will be remembered and respected for his years of service. Submitted by the Torbay Branch # 117 of The Royal Canadian Legion SWAINE, Benjamin Wallace “Ben” WWI Ben was born in Canso, Nova Scotia on December 11, 1897, to Emily “Emma” McLellan of New Harbour and Samuel I. Swaine Jr. of Canso. He enlisted on March 31, 1916 and served with the 193rd Canadian Infantry Battalion; 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion, North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was killed accidentally on March 24, 1918 at the age of 21. He is buried in Noulette Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France.
