Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 195 TUTTY, Donald Campbell WWII Donald was born in 1925 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He was only 16 when he went to war to join the Merchant Navy in Halifax. He served in the North and South Atlantic. He got Malaria in Africa and was hospitalized for several weeks in Port Elizabeth, Africa. When he got out, Don and two ship mates were held captive in South Africa, where they lived on radishes that they could steal from a garden. Donald was rescued by an American ship. They went to South America where they heard of the War ending. He never saw his two shipmates again. Don was one of five of his family who served in World War II. He was a member of the Baddeck Legion Branch # 053 for 13 years. Donald passed away in 2005. Submitted independently TUTTY, Joseph “Joe” WWII Joe was born on September 5, 1918, the son of Charles and Mary (Campbell) Tutty. Private Tutty served in WWII with the Calgary Horse in Belgium and Holland. For his participation in the liberation of Holland, he received the Holland Medal. He married Winnie Burns, of New Waterford, NS. Joe passed away in October 1987 and is buried at Mira Gut Baptist Cemetery. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion TUTTY, Willard WWII Willard was born on May 27, 1915, the son of Charles and Mary (Campbell) Tutty. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940 and worked as a stoker. In December 1940, he was serving on the destroyer Saguenay when it was torpedoed as it protected a convoy 300 miles west of Ireland. Twenty-one sailors were killed. Willard was severely injured and taken to a Halifax Hospital. Willard passed away in 1942 at the age of 27. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion
