Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 33 BOUTILIER, Louis Sandford “Sam” WWII Sam was born on July 25, 1913, son of Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier. He was a member of the Merchant Navy from 1941 to 1942. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served overseas as a signalman with the Royal Canadian Corps Signals serving in Italy, Holland and France. He was awarded several medals: the France and Germany Star, the Italy Star and the Holland Medal. After the war, he became a fisherman and worked on the lake boats. He married Beatrice McEnery. Sam passed away on October 9, 2001. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion BOUTILIER, Wellington Edward “Duke” WWII Duke was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on December 22, 1901, the son of James and Christine Boutilier. The family resided in Port Morien for several years. Duke was a Gunner and served in the Artillery from 1942 to 1945, stationed in England. He received several war medals. He returned to Port Caledonia in 1945 and worked in the mines until his retirement. Duke was married to Stella MacLeod, who died in 1936, and later Ivy Walker from England. Duke passed away in September 1988. Submitted by the Port Morien Branch # 055 of The Royal Canadian Legion BOUWMAN, Floris WWII Floris was born in Leiden, Holland in 1917 to Mathys and Maris Bouwman. He joined the Navy in the Netherlands during World War II and served as a driver mechanic. He was a survivor of wartime forced labour in Germany and also bravely participated in stopping the advancement of enemy troops after the bridges were destroyed, by breaking canal ice in the darkness of night. Floris was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted independently
