Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 47 CASHIN, Leo WWII Leo was born in 1905 in Port Felix to William Cashin and Suzanne Marr. Leo served in World War II in the Merchant Navy. His brother Amos was a veteran of WWI and his nephew Ernest also served in WWII. Ernest died January 23, 1997 in Glades Lodge, Halifax at the age of 91 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Port Felix. Submitted by the Torbay Branch # 117 of The Royal Canadian Legion CASHIN, Amos Joseph WWI Amos was born in 1898 in Port Felix, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in the Canadian Army with the 97th Battalion C.E.F. He served in Canada, England, and France. He became an Honorary Member of Torbay Branch in 1978. Amos died on December 30, 1985 and is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Port Felix. Submitted by the Torbay Branch # 117 of The Royal Canadian Legion CASHIN, Dennis Vincent WWI Dennis was born in Port Felix in 1893 to William and Clara Cashin. He was a World War I veteran having served in 237th Battalion, Canadian Expedition Forces. Dennis was injured in France, he was in the trenches when an explosion happened and a brick landed on one side of his head. He was left with a large indent where the brick had injured him. His son, Paul (Babe) expressed how his father was not the same man upon his return from war. After the war in 1919 he was a lighthouse keeper for 32 years. He would stay all night on the island and visit his wife during the day. When they first lived at the Lighthouse, they had two daughters, Monica was born on Jan. 3rd and her sister Excilda on Dec. 27th the same year. They stayed on the island until they were 5 years old, as they had to start school. Dennis built a house near the shoreline and was also a fisherman. Dennis and Clara had 12 children, 4 girls and 8 boys. His wife died in 1981 and Dennis died Aug. 28, 1964 at the age of 71. He is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Port Felix.
