Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 95 HENDSBEE, James Leo WWII James was born in 1924 in Half Island Cove, Nova Scotia to the late Stanley and Elizabeth (England) Hendsbee. He served during the Second World War with the Seaforth Highlanders in Italy, France, Germany and Holland. After returning from the war, he returned to Half Island Cove where he fished for lobsters with his father. He worked for Acadia Fisheries in Mulgrave, and returned home to the Canso Fish Plant, where he retired. He belonged to a Dart League for many years, which he enjoyed greatly. He was a family oriented man loved by all. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Isabel (Hendsbee) Hendsbee. They raised 4 daughters and 1 son. A Service was held at the same time for James’s daughter, Phyllis Armsworthy who passed away Feb. 11, 2011 and James passed away on May 29, 2011. He will be remembered and respected for his years of service. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1959 and served in Canada with the Lorne Scots (P.D & H. Regt). He retired as the RSM in 1994. William has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration 2 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is a Past President and life member of the Colchester Legion Branch # 026. He has been a Legion member for over 20 years. Submitted by the Colchester Branch # 026 of The Royal Canadian Legion HILL, George Urquhart WWII George was born on October 29, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1939. He served with 111 R.A.F. Fighter Command, North Africa in Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and North Africa. He was one of the few recipients of the D.F.C. and two bars and he had shot down his first enemy plane during the Dieppe raid. Later, in North Africa, George led the famous “Treble One” squadron and piled up a score of fourteen victories. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Aircrew Europe Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal. George passed away in November 1969.
