Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 99 HAM, Oberlin Joseph WWI Oberlin was born in Mahone Bay on January 27, 1897, and enlisted in the 64th Bn of the CEF on September 18, 1915, in Sussex, NB. Upon enlisting he stated that he was a chauffeur by trade. He arrived in the UK in April, 1916, was transferred to the “Fighting” 26th Battalion in France on June 28, 1916. On 2 November, 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field during the Battle of Hill 70. He was discharged in May 1919, and moved to Vancouver. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion HAMM, Alexander Leopold WWI Alexander enlisted in the 85th Bn (NS Highlanders) in Halifax in on October 12, 1915. He declared that his next of kin was Mrs. Mary Hamm of Mahone Bay and that his calling was that of an engineer. He served at the front with the 85th Bn and suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm on June 27, 1917. He was posted to the UK in April 1918 and finished the war as an infantry instructor Company Sergeant-Major. He declared that he was born on November 31, 1891, and a blacksmith by trade. He was the son of David and Selena Hamm and in July 1916, when he married Gladys J O’Brien of Pleasantville.
