MacDonald was born in Big Beach, NS, in 1890 to John M. and Mary (MacNeil) MacDonald. He joined the Army and served with the 85th Battalion in England and in France during World War I. He was mortally wounded in the taking of Cambrai in the break through the German lines in the last days of the war. It was to be the last major battle. Joseph died of wounds in Buxton, England on October 12, 1918, at the age of 28. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacDOUGALL, Colin A. WWII Colin was born on Christmas Island, NS to Donald Joseph and Mary Ann (Gillis) MacDougall. He joined the Cape Breton Highlanders for summer camp at Aldershot in 1937 and was part of the Officers Training Corps while at St. F.X. in 1937-1938. In 1940, he was with the Canadian Fusiliers of Woodstock, Ontario and then to the Royal Canadian Signal Corp in 1941. He enlisted in the RCAF on August 30, 1941 in Halifax. He went to radio school in Chatam, ON where he earned his Air Observers Badge on July 20, 1942. He was posted overseas on August 6, 1942, attached to 57 Sqn Royal Air Force. He worked his way up AC2-8/41, LAC 1/42, TSGT 7/42, Pilot officer (NAV) 1/43. From officer training, he was posted to 431 Sqn on February 24, 1943. Colin passed away on the night of the 11/12 of June 1943, when the Wellington Air Craft HE 392, with a crew of 5, was shot down on a raid on the Rhur, Germany by enemy fighters; it crashed, hitting the ground at high speed near Schagen, Holland. One body was recovered then and four others were recovered in 1993 and buried in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacDOUGALL, Neil J. WWII Neil was from East End, Antigonish County, NS. He was killed in action on March 4, 1945 while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He is buried at Harrogate Cemetery, Harrogate, England.
