Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 153 MacKINNON, Allan WWI Allan was born on March 21, 1893, the son of James C. and Katie (McMullen) MacKinnon (mother died in childbirth). Allan was raised in Shenacadie by his grandfather, Donald. He went to the coal mines at age 14. Private Allan MacKinnon joined the Army with his half-brother Alex. Both men were sent overseas. Alex was killed by a shell, and on October 20, 1915, Allan was killed by machine gun fire at Ploegsteert, Belgium. Allan joined the 25th Battalion on March 31, 1915, sailed for England on May 20, 1915, went to France mid-September 1915 and was killed seven months after joining at age 22. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacKINNON, Donald C. WWII Donald was born in MacKinnon’s Harbour, NS to Rory S. and Margaret (MacNeil) MacKinnon. He enlisted in the Army and served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in England and in France during World War II. Lt. MacKinnon was killed in action in Normandy, France on July 8, 1944, at the age of 26. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacKINNON, Hugh E. WWI Hugh was born in Beaver Cove, NS to John and Christine (MacNeil) MacKinnon. He served with the 25th Battalion of the Army in France during World War I. He was so severely gassed with chlorine that he was returned to Canada. Hugh joined the Army on November 27, 1914 in Halifax. His trade was a miner. He embarked from Canada on May 20, 1915 on the SS Saxonia and took the trade cook; embarked for France on September 15, 1915. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on August 5, 1918 for action against the 37 German divisions on their offensive. He took sick at the end of the war and was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He returned to Canada for treatment on February 9, 1919 and died while on active service on June 8, 1919. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion
