Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 155 MacKINNON, Malcolm Joseph WWI Malcolm was born on March 23, 1894, the son of John A. and Peggy (MacNeil) MacKinnon of Iona Rear. He enlisted in the Army and served with the RCR in England and in France during World War I. In the battle of Courcelette, the Regiment was to capture German trenches in front of the City. They were under heavy artillery and machine gun fire all the way across no-man’s land. After fighting off counter attacks the regiment had to withdraw as there wasn’t enough troops left to hold the position and had run out of ammunition. Pte. MacKinnon was killed on October 8, 1916 at age 24; he has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the ramparts of the Great Vimy Memorial with the names of 11,285 Canadian soldiers posted missing, presumed dead. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacKINNON, Martin W. WWI Martin, born 1891, was the son of Joseph H. and Margaret (MacLellan) MacKinnon of Beaver Cove. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 85th Battalion in England and in France during World War I. He was killed on August 10, 1918 at the Battle of Amiens, 8 – 11 August. The Canadians advanced seven miles, eliminating two German divisions and took 5,000 prisoners; the next day they advanced two miles against great odds – eight fresh German divisions. In advancing over twelve miles on a five mile front, Canadians took close to 9,000 prisoners at a cost of 12,000 casualties. He served with the RCAF as a wireless air gunner in England from 1943 to 1945. He was one of five brothers who served. He returned to Cape Breton after the war and married his sweetheart Genevieve to whom he was married for 65 years. He worked on the Steel Plant for 43 years, and after retiring he went back to school and achieved his BA in History. He was a member of Sydney Legion Branch 12 for over 60 years.
