Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 159 MacNEIL, Angus J. WWI Angus was born in Gillis Point, NS in 1867 to parents John and Mary (MacLean) MacNeil. He enlisted in the Army and served in England and in France during World War I. He served in the 94th Battalion Victoria Argyle Highlanders of Baddeck before going on garrison duty. Capt. MacNeil died while on active service on October 7, 1918 age 51. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacNEIL, Hugh Columba WWII Hugh Columba MacNeil was born in 1919 to Joseph and Sarah (MacNeil) MacNeil of Red Point, enlisted in the Canadian Air Force at Halifax on May 7, 1941 and served in Canada, England and Germany during World War II. He went to St. Huberts, Quebec as AC2; was promoted to LAC on September 19, 1941; did the Air Observer course at Chatham, Ontario; was promoted to L/Sgt on March 14, 1942; went overseas on May 12, 1942; was attached to the Royal Air Force Sqn’s 31, 40, 49 and 50; went on Officers Training on July 28, 1942; posted to 57 Sqn Royal Air Force as Navigator on Lancasters on November 16, 1942. MacNeil was reported missing presumed dead on May 13, 1943 after air operations on Duisburg, Germany. The Lancaster broke in half. There were seven crew members aboard; two lived, two were killed by German Night Fighter and F.O. MacNeil and two others were assumed killed. Hugh was 24 years old at the time of his death. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacNEIL, John Alex WWII John Alex MacNeil was born in 1904 to parents Alex P. and Catherine (MacNeil) of Gillis Point. He served as an Able Seaman in the Merchant Navy on the High Seas (North Atlantic) during World War II. He was aboard the SS Indier (Belgium) when he was lost at sea on April 3, 1941, at the age of 37. The ship was torpedoed by U-73 at 0512 hours.
