Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 161 MacNEIL, John Allan WWI John was born on March 15, 1885, the son of Michael and Christy (MacNeil) MacNeil of Iona Rear, NS. He married Victoria MacNeil of Glace Bay. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 25th Battalion in England and in France during World War I. John A. MacNeil was in the battle to take Vimy Ridge. The French and British counted 130,000 dead and wounded. Pte. MacNeil was killed on April 28, 1917, at the age of 27, and has no known grave. His name is inscribed on the ramparts of the Vimy Memorial: “To the valor of their countrymen in the Great War and in memory of their 60,000 dead this monument is raised by the people of Canada.” Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacNEIL, John Lawrence PEACETIME John was born in Arichat, Nova Scotia in 1952. He enlisted in the Navy and served in Canada on board HMCS Annapolis, Fraser, Skeena, Vancouver, Montreal, Preserver and Provider during Peacetime. He was awarded the CD1 and SSM (NATO). John has been a member of the Grandona Legion Branch 124 for seventeen years. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacNEIL, John Murdock WWI John Murdock MacNeil of Washabuck, NS, son of John A. MacNeil, was a Sergeant in the 94th Regiment of Baddeck. He was taken on strength on November 26, 1914 as a Pte. He served in England and in France during World War I. John was killed in the Battle of Mount Sorrel, the same battle as Jerry Campbell, while serving with the 25th Battalion. A very heavy German artillery shelling lasted for a day and a half; one unit lost over 60 officers and men. This battle cost nearly 8,000 casualties; it lasted from June 2 to June 13, 1916. John Murdock was killed on June 10, 1916 and has no known grave. His name is engraved in Stone Panels at Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium, “to those lost without a trace in the Ypres Salient.” Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion
