He enlisted in the Navy on August 24, 1940 as a Stoker at HMCS Stadacona, Halifax. He served during World War II in Canada and in Ireland. Stoker 1st Class John Roderick MacNeil made 22 Atlantic Crossings on several ships. He was posted to HMCS Mayflower (Corvette) on January 10, 1941. He was reported missing from ship on October 1, 1942; his body was recovered on October 12, 1942 at Berth #71 Froyle Shipyard, Londonderry, Ireland. Cause of death was drowning; he was 30 years old. John is buried at Londonderry City Cemetery. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacNEIL, Leo WWI Leo MacNeil of MacNeil’s Vale, Rear Iona, was born on June 27, 1895, to Dan S. and Katie (MacDonald) MacNeil. He joined the 185th Cape Breton Highlanders. Formed in 1916, it was meant to form a Highland Bde from Nova Scotia but was used to reinforce other units. He served in England and in France during World War I. Leo transferred to the 85th Bn Nova Scotia then to the 73rd Bn Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (Black Watch). He was killed on February 26, 1917, at the age of 21, in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. When the Germans couldn’t take Paris they consolidated at Vimy Ridge, a nine mile barrier; in 1915 the French couldn’t take it and the British in 1916 couldn’t. In five days the Canadians took Vimy Ridge at a cost of 11,000 casualties and advanced four miles, taking 4,000 prisoners and over 50 guns.
