He served with the Canadian Infantry Corp. He was killed in action in Belgium on October 16, 1944. Submitted by Arras Branch #059, The Royal Canadian Legion MacRITCHIE, Daniel WWI Daniel was born on July 7, 1888, the son of Norman and Mary (Matheson) MacRitchie of Washabuck Bridge. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse in England and in France during World War I. He was killed on April 15, 1918, age 29, in the charge of Moreuil Wood. Heavy fighting with sword, pistol, rifle and bayonet killed many Germans; others were killed as troops were dismounted and captured several machine guns. L/Cpl MacRitchie was wounded and died at the Field Hospital in Rouen, the ancient capital of Normandy on the Seine River. It is famous as the place where William the Conqueror died and Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Submitted by Gardona Branch #124, The Royal Canadian Legion MacSWEEN, Peter WWII Peter was born in Donkin, NS on August 30, 1917, to John and Minnie (MacMullin) MacSween. He joined the Army in 1940 and first served with the Engineers Corps, where he traveled throughout California and Arizona demonstrating the Bailey Bridge to the Americans. He was transferred to the Support Company of the Cape Breton Highlanders, where he served overseas in Italy and Holland. He was discharged in 1946. He married Mayme MacKenzie.
