His family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1889. He joined the Canadian Infantry, Manitoba Regiment, and served in Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, Victory Medal, and the British War Medal. He was killed in action on November 6, 1917 at age 35. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele, Belgium, Lot LVIII-D-26. He served the Army with the 42nd Battalion Royal Highlanders of Canada in Canada and Europe. He was awarded the Distinguised Conduct Medal and the Military Medal and Bar. William’s acts of courage were recorded in the Book of the 42nd Highlanders of Canada. William passed away on September 3, 1968. Submitted by Family.
