Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 213 SMITH, Mac WWII Mac was born on December 18, 1920 in Glen Haven, Nova Scotia, one of nine children. He joined the Army on November 12, 1941. After basic training, he was put on a driving course after which he became a driving instructor and then personal driver to a high-ranking officer. Five days after D-Day, he was with the 5th Anti-Tank Regiment, where he stayed for the rest of his time in World War II. He served in Canada, France, the Netherlands and the Battle of the Falaise Gap. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France-Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He received a citation signed by Fred Marshall Mongomery on February 8, 1946. Mac was a member of Seabright Legion Branch 116 and was the first Vice President of this Branch. He served with the West Nova Scotia Regiment overseas during the war. He was a prisoner of war for one year. He was a Life Member of Dr. C. B. Lumsden Branch #74 of The Royal Canadian Legion, and a Life Member of the West Nova Memory Club, and the Lions Club until his death. Submitted by Dr. C. D. Lumsden Branch #074, The Royal Canadian Legion SPINNEY, James William “Bill” WWII Bill was born on April 29, 1917 in Stellarton, NS. He served the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada, and the United Kingdom. He was killed on November 16, 1942, while serving on overseas air opertions with #101 R.A.F. Squadron. He was the pilot of a Lancaster aircraft W4326, which crashed at approximately 0400 hours. He is buried at Towyn Cemetery in England: Class 2, Row 6, Grave 288. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal, C.V.S.M. and clasp and the War Medal. Submitted by Stellarton Branch #028, The Royal Canadian Legion
