Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 51 COGGIN (COGGON), George Arthur WWI George was born in Sussex, NB, to Thomas and Myrtle Coggin on 4 March 1889. It appears that he enlisted in the CEF in 1914 and may have severed in the 2nd Field Bakery of the CASC. He was a charter member of Branch 49 Mahone Bay of the Royal Canadian Legion. During WW II his son Allan served in Burma as a pilot in the RCAF. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion COLWELL, Ray John WWII Ray enlisted as a second-lieutenant in the 1st Depot Bn of the NS Regiment in July, 1918, in Halifax. In 1935 he was appointed as the commanding officer of the Halifax Rifles and remained in that position until 1943. As a lieutenant-colonel, commanding the 1st Canadian Hussars, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (‘immediate’ for gallantry) on 11 June, 1944, for his actions in Normandy during the horrific Battle of Le Mesnil-Patry. He retired to Mahone Bay and was an active member of the local Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion CORKUM, Harold Victor WWI Harold was born in Chester on 15 May 1898. He was teaching school in Mahone Bay in 1917 and it appears that he served in the militia during the Great War. He was appointed as the principal of the Mahone Bay School in 1929 and started a cadet corps for the boys of the town. Harold took a leave of absence to go to war in 1939. Major Corkum served in WNSR during WW II and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration in June 1944. He was elected as the mayor of Mahone Bay in 1960 and died in office in 1975.
