Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 85 ERNST, Russell WWI Russell was born in Mahone Bay on August 11, 1899, and enlisted in the CEF, at age 16, in Mahone Bay on 10 March 1916. Upon enlisting he declared that his next of kin was his mother Bertha Ernst of Mahone Bay. In August of 1916, when he had turned 17, he was posted to B Company of the 219th Bn. He was transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps in April, 1917, and arrived in France the following month. Russell was discharged in March 1919. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion ERNST, William Gordon WWI William was born on 18 October, 1897, and enlisted in the 193rd Bn on 4 April 1916 in Windsor. Upon enlisting he noted that he had been born in Mahone Bay; was a student at Kings College; and that his next of kin was his father E.A. Ernst of Mahone Bay. William would end the war as a captain. He served at the front with the 85th Bn and was wounded on 17 August 1917 and again in April and in May of 1918. William was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in the field – twice. PC, MC and bar, KC. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion FEENER, John Edward Freeman WWI John enlisted in the 219th Bn on March10, 1916, in Mahone Bay. Upon enlisting he declared that he was born in LaHave in November 1875 (in fact his real date of birth was 8 November 1873), was living in Mahone Bay and that his next of kin was his wife Almina Feener. He was later transferred to the 246th Bn (NS Highlanders) in Halifax and discharged in June 1917. Submitted by Zone 13, The Royal Canadian Legion
