He served the Canadian Army with Regiment No. A 800 414 2nd Battalion Infantry, Princess Pat’s Canadian Light. He also spent a short time in Japan. He served in Korea from 1950 to 1953. For the first time in Canadian history, Vernon was awarded the United Nations Presidential Citation for holding Hill 677 at Kapyong on April 24, 1951. He was part of the United Nations Special Force. Vernon passed away in 1991. Submitted by Family. GATES, Thomas Willett WWII Thomas was born in Middleton, NS in 1924. He served the Royal Canadian Army in Canada during World War Two. Thomas was a member of Bear River Branch #022, The Royal Canadian Legion for twenty years before he passed away in 1980. She enlisted in the Air Force and served in Special duty Area and in Peacetime with DGMC Ottawa, CFCSC and GGHG Toronto, CFAA Israel, 1 RCR and BCompt Petawawa, 12 Wing and MARLANT Halifax and CFSU(E) Geilenkirchen. She served in Tel Aviv, Israel from 1994 to 1997 and in Kosovo from December 1999 to May 2000. Joanne has been a member of the Toronto Branch 527 and Petawawa Branch 517 for 35 years.
