He enlisted in the Army and served with the “A” Troop, 104 Coast Battery Division in Canada during World War II. He was awarded the 1939-1945 War Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for his service. He was a member of the Hants County Branch 09 for 24 years. Frank passed away in 2011. Submitted by Hants County Branch #009, The Royal Canadian Legion GILLESPIE, Donald “Red” WWII Red was born in Nova Scotia, and lived his adult life in Amherst and Kentville, NS. He served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment from 1943 to 1946 in Europe. He was a Life Member and MSM with Palm Leaf recipient. He had been a member of Kings Branch #006, The Royal Canadian Legion for thirty three years at the time of his death in 2000. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England during World War II. While serving in England, Sapper Gillis developed pneumonia and was returned to Canada in late 1943. He passed away from his illness in Camp Hill, Halifax in 1944. He was the son of Hugh A. and Mary Gillis of New Waterford, NS, their oldest boy and second child of eleven.
