The World War One Cenotaph in Antigonish is located at the Federal Building Grounds, Main St. It was previously located at the intersection of St. Ninian St. and Main St., West end of town (see story regarding the move on p.213). It was built on the above location in October/November of 1937 and was unveiled on November 11, 1937. The material used in its construction was a North Grant (Antigonish County) sandstone. It is a plain obelisk, 17 feet high, tapering to a pointed cap, designed and completed by F.W. Arsenault. The concrete base was put in and donated by the MacDonald Construction Company, Halifax, N.S. On three sides of the monument are black granite slabs on which the names of the dead were carved by W.T. Dalton, Shelburne. On the North side is an inscription composed by Miss K.M. MacDonald, Teacher in England at Morrison High School (1937). It was the people of Antigonish and surrounding areas that donated to the fund toward the building of the Cenotaph in the town of Antigonish.

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 3 President’s Message On behalf of the Officers and Members of Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command, we would like to present the 17th issue of the Veterans Service Recognition Book. This book, as in the previous issues, shares the many faces and stories of the men and women who have served our country in the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP during times of War and on Peacekeeping missions around the world. Our Veterans Service Recognition Book, which is a huge success, would not be possible without the generous donations from the advertisers and private individuals. Your contributions make this project possible year after year. Congratulations once again to Chairman and Editor Steve Wessel. His dedication over the past 17 years ensures that the VSRB continues to highlight the Veterans from NS/NU Command. Their stories need to be told and honoured by us all. The books are sent to all the schools and libraries in our Command so the history and sacrifices of these Veterans will continue to be remembered. Special thanks to Fenety Marketing and Mark Fenety for once again producing a quality product that we are proud of. Lest We Forget Yours in Comradeship Marion Fryday-Cook President Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command The Royal Canadian Legion

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 9 Project Chairman’s/Editor Message As project Chairman, it is an honour and a privilege to present the 2021 edition, the 17th book in our Veterans Service Recognition Book (VSRB) series. All of these books are produced in an effort to honour, acknowledge and remember the contributions made by so many brave Canadians who have served, not only in times of war, but also during many peacekeeping and peacemaking missions. We also recognize and support those men and women who continue the proud tradition of service to Canada throughout the world in the Canadian Forces and the RCMP. During these past 18 months we have endured the revolving door pandemic we call Covid, with temporary branch shutdowns and very few branch meetings, so I understand why the submissions for this edition have been lower than previous years, but I offer my sincere thanks to all of the Legion branches and members of the general public who took the time to support this publication by contributing biographies and photos. I would also like to thank the many businesses, groups and individuals who continue to generously support these publications through advertising and through personal financial donations. As always, I wish to thank Fenety Marketing for their continued partnership and shared expertise in the production of these books. I would also like to recognize and thank Comrade Gary Siliker, CD, for his continued contributions, and Florence Br.#083, District A, for allowing us to re-print portions of their Remembrance Book. In closing, we look forward to issuing the 18th edition of the VSRB series in the fall of 2022, and if you would like to contribute to the 2022 edition, please use the form at the back of this book and send it to our Command office. In Comradeship, Steve Wessel Project Chairman / Editor Veterans’ Service Recognition Book

War Poem For sixteen years she watched him grow From a boy to a brave young man But when the war began he felt he must go Fight for his country in a far away land Her husband had died five years prior And she could not lose her son too But all the boys were signing up And he thought it was the right thing to do He was brawny and tall for his age So he enlisted without suspicion And despite his mother begging He left to prepare for his first mission He made great friends with the other boys And he learned how to shoot a gun He felt like a real grown up man And was actually having fun He dreamed of how the girls back home Would be impressed by his valor And believed it would only be a few more months Until the Allies won the war He would then go home victorious And live a long happy life Maybe build a big house Have children and a beautiful wife But in his first battle something happened For which he could not prepare Suddenly it seemed as though Poison filled the air Following are a selection of the poetry submitted as well as a complete listing of the winners in each category: 1st Place Senior poetry, Taylor MacIssaac, Submitted by Port Hawkesbury Br. 43, District A 2nd Place Senior Poetry, Madison Delorey, Submitted by Arras Br. 59, District B

I taste blood spattering from his head. I smell sulphur from the gunpowder. I know he is gone for good. I wake in a cold sweat. I look over to my nightstand and I see my brother’s recruitment photo from the war. I can’t shake the night terrors. I miss him terribly. Today I will visit his grave. We keep safe by distancing, handwashing and masking. Staying the “Blazes Home” like our Premiere is asking. Nothing compares to World Wars 1 and 2. But through sacrifices we’ve learned what to do. Our Canadian Forces fought with bravery and heart. They showed that Canadians all have a part. Veterans stood up for freedom and paid a high cost. Poppies blew across fields where young and old lives were lost. We are sick of Covid and not being able to connect! But now it’s our turn to serve and protect. Our soldiers, responders, our nans and pops. We listen to doctors and nurses to make Covid stop. 2020 is our time to return the debt. Protecting our seniors. Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 23 continued ... continued ... The Lucky Ones My entire life, I’ve been told I’m lucky. Lucky to have grown up in a loving household, lucky to have carried a Ross Rifle that didn’t jam up in the muddy trenches, and lucky to have survived the War. I guess I am lucky, if lucky means forced to bear the guilt of taking dozens of lives. I am lucky, if lucky means unable to sleep because every time I close my eyes I’m transported back to that battlefield. So yeah, I guess I’m lucky. During my deployment at Vimy, I saw horrors I pray to forget. The problem is, I can’t forget. I can’t forget the faces of the soldiers I fatally shot. I can’t forget the mutilated bodies of my friends lying on the battlefield. I can’t forget what I’ve done. Some days, I find myself unable to feel and in these periods of numbness, I can’t feel sorrow, fear, or despair. Other days an influx of these terrible feelings returns and I’m forced to relive my time in Vimy over and over in a vicious, unforgiving cycle. At the time of the War, I was diagnosed with shell shock. Not even medical experts understood that wounds weren’t just physical, nor did they understand how to treat shell shock. They brushed this condition off, perhaps treated by shock therapy or, if you were lucky, the less barbaric treatment of talk and physical therapy. However, these treatments were simply to get soldiers back on the front lines and didn’t have a goal of long-term rehabilitation in mind. Men who were emotionally distressed to the point of being unable to walk, speak or function, including me, were deemed cowards or insane. We weren’t cowards, nor insane, we were victims. When I arrived back home, a small part of me believed I was still back in those vile trenches. The War had been over for years, but I was not done fighting. I couldn’t sleep. I’d often wake up, teary-eyed, confusing my bedroom for a battlefield and my wife for an enemy soldier. Eventually, I was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and began therapy. Talking about my experiences at Vimy helped me immensely on my long road to recovery. Seventy-two years after Canada claimed Vimy Ridge, my battle was finally over. I died a proud Canadian veteran in recovery of PTSD. I was survived by my beautiful wife who stood by my side despite the hardships we’ve faced. Without her, my lifeline, I probably would’ve faced a more gruesome end. My entire life, I’ve been told I’m lucky. At first, I didn’t realize it, but now I do. I am lucky. I am lucky I sought help for my PTSD. I am lucky I had a loving wife who supported my recovery. I am lucky that I didn’t have to fight this battle alone. I am one of the lucky ones. In Canada, approximately 10% of all war-zone veterans experience PTSD. An even smaller fraction of these veterans have a similar, happy ending. Too many veterans have met tragic ends because their PTSD remained undiagnosed or they did not seek treatment. Especially during these unprecedented times, it is important to reach out for help. The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on everyone, but is notably harder for veterans suffering from PTSD. This pandemic creates more stress and PTSD triggers. Social isolation will make seeking treatment increasingly difficult. Today, it is more crucial than ever to seek help, and ensure others seek help, for PTSD. 1st Place Senior Essay, Sara Pluta, Submitted by Port Hawkesbury Br. 43, District A 2nd Place Senior Essay, Carly Samson, Submitted by Arras Br. 59, District B

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 25 continued ... continued ... We Are Still Here In honour of our Indigenous Veterans We are still here We are still living people We fought for you We killed for you We fought in wars beside you All we ask for is recognition Why don’t people see that we are the same Even if the war is over We are still fighting We are still at war We are at war with ourselves as a country It needs to stop Now put down your guns, and step off the battlefield. This poem is about how indigenous people of Canada are still at war for our treaty rights that are being ignored. The fact is that we were being treated like animals, physically and verbally assaulted, and being called “Savage” or “Dirty Indian”. The fact is that I’ve already been called both of those, and I’m only 12 years old. It doesn’t matter the age, no one should ever be mistreated because of their race or the colour of their skin. It needs to stop. We’ve been here for thousands of years, and we’re still trying to build peace. It’s showing up in our schools, and it’s disgusting. When you learn how to talk, you learn it from an influence like an adult. Same goes for racism. It gets passed down. Is this really what you want our generation to look like? We fought and died alongside you for peace, but where is ours? “Now put down your guns, and step off the battlefield.” What does that mean to you? Ask yourself that. To me, it means to end the fighting and come to peace. We still have that warrior in us. You can burn down our homes, take our rights away, but we will still thrive. We’re not going anywhere. You can waste your breath, and voice, talking about how natives are in the wrong. It’s not everyday I can use mine to be heard, so I’ll be using it on a problem that’s been going on for generations. If I’m lucky, I’ll live long enough to see a difference. No matter what, my spirit will forever be fighting. 1st Place Intermediate Essay, Cadence Davidson, Submitted by Shubenacadie Br. 111, District C 2nd Place Intermediate Essay, Aaliyah Thompson, Submitted by Enfield Br. 133, District F

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 27 continued ... AWar Story Have you ever thought of planes in the war? War might not have always been people on battlefields with guns, there are many more parts of war then just that. This is a story about my great Aunt Evelyn and my great Uncle John, who both were a part of WWII. In 1939 John joined the armed forces. He was 21 years of age. He went to Saskatchewan Canada to learn how to fly a plane. He then went to Manitoba Canada to train to be a pilot and earn his wings. After training he was sent overseas to England. He was sent to Shawberry (England) for more training, where he became the pilot of a Lancaster bomber. He was stationed in Derbyshire (England). He flew 31 missions including a bombing raid over Berlin (Germany), and one to Norway to break a dam. For his efforts in the war he was awarded the DFC which stands for Distinguished Flying Cross. In Shawberry is where he met Evelyn. At the time Evelyn was living in Moreton Corbet which was near Shawberry. She worked in a post office. On John’s 22nd birthday he met Evelyn, he came to the post office for some stamps. A few days later he came back and he came back again. Then on the third night he asked her to the movies. It was a big thing to be invited to the movies because only soldiers were allowed, and that was the start to their relationship. They got married in 1945 and when the war was over John returned to Canada. At that time Evelyn was 5 months pregnant with their first child so she couldn’t travel. Once the baby was 5 months old, she travelled to Halifax N.S. on the ship RMS Aquitania. The sailing was in March, and was very rough, causing many to be seasick including Evely and her 5 month old son. Upon arrival in Halifax N.S. they were checked out by doctors. Once cleared they were allowed to take a train to Moncton N.B., where they were reunited with John. Then they travelled to Sussex N.B. to meet John’s family. In conclusion the next Remembrance Day try to remember John and Evelyn Walker, a bomber who didn’t just want stamps. 1st Place Junior Essay, Zoe Walker, Submitted by Elmsdale Br. 48, District F 2nd Place Junior Essay, Amelia Rovers, Submitted by Arras Br. 59, District B

Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 31 Addison “Wesley” Spinney Addison “Wesley” Spinney was born in 1923 in Pubnico Head, Yarmouth County. He served during WWII as Quartermaster aboard the destroyer HMCS Qu’Appelle which fought on D-Day June 6, 1944 and subsequent weeks. He also served on a corvette, the HMCS Kamloops, that was a convoy escorting ship from Canada to the United Kingdom. He said that they were shot at from under the sea, from the sky and from enemy ships. He remembered vividly plucking casualties out of the water and at times during a battle they could not stop. He said they had to steam through them and could hear them hollering. He came out of the war without a scratch but with a lot of bad memories that were with him until his death. Upon his return to civilian life, he continued his military interests by serving 18 years with the 14th Field Artillery and as an instructor for 33 years with the 110 Yarmouth Army cadets sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155 Wedgeport NS of which he was a most faithful member always attending meetings and legion events. In 2014 he received the French Medal of Honour that was instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte to thank his best soldiers. He also received the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Normandy medal. He died at age 97 on December 4, 2020. Photo by Percy J, Couttreau
