He served in the Army for 33 years with the following units: CFB Shilo, Manitoba from May 1982 to July 1986; HMCS Nipigon in Halifax, NS from July 1986 to July 1988; CFB Gander, NL from July 1988 to August 1990; HMCS Provider in Esquimalt, BC from August 1990 to July 1993; and CFB Gagetown in Oromocto, NB from July 1993 to February 2015. He was a part of Joint Task Force in Afghanistan from February to August 2007. He received the CD2, QGJM and SWACS. He was stationed at Currie Barracks in Calgary in 1967; RCSME Chilliwack in 1968; 4 Fd Sqn in Werl, Germany from 1968 to 1978 with NATO; 4 Fd Sqn in Lahr, Germany from 1970 to 1971, NATO; 3 Fd Sqn in Chilliwack form 1971 to 1974; UNEF (Egypt) from 1973 to 1974, UN; 4 CER in Lahr, Germany from 1974 to 1978, NATO; 22 Fd Sqn in Gagetown from 1978 to 1980; CFB Halifax from 1980 to 1982; CFS Inuvik from 1982 to 1984; CFB Ottawa from 1984 to 1988; UNDOF (Golan Heights) in 1985, UN; CFB Summerside from 1988 to 1992; UNFICYP (Cyprus) form 1988 to 1989, UN and CFB Shearwater from 1992 to 1996. His other duties included clearing mortar range of live explosives in 1973, building a bridge in Holberg on Vancouver Island in 1973, earthquake disaster assistance in Italy in 1976, exchange with the US National Guard in Mississippi in 1993 and exchange with the US National Guard in Pittsburgh in 1995. Allan was the recipient of the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize for United Nations Peacekeeping and received the CD1, UN Medal (Egypt), UN Medal (Golan Heights), UN Medal Cyprus, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal and NATO Medal.
